Sun Gazing: Harnessing the power of the morning light
“Night, night sleep tight. I love you, see you in the morning light” is something that I have said to all my children every night since their birth. My eldest turns ten in a month and the double-digit number is hitting me kind of hard. It makes me reflect on all the wonderful times I have had as a mother but also how much I have grown in my spiritual walk as a person. Tucking my children into bed and letting them know that im eager to see their faces in the morning is multifaceted. It’s true in all the obvious ways but im also eager to bask in the light of the sun with them. The benefits supersede the notion of simplicity but are rooted and grounded in long time tradition and health practices.
Starting Slow
Seeing the glow over their delicate skin as the sun kisses their face is a sight that I want to hold in my mind’s eye forever. I love watching their sleepy little faces transform from tired and melancholy to awake and happy in a matter of minutes. The elated glow is not only an external manifestation but an internal one. One that exudes and last for the day ahead. One that propels them to higher heights of achievement in a single moment. Living in the “Valley of the Sun” where we get on average 300 days of unbated sun, helps us in moments like this, but this moment of Zen can be achieved by all people alike.
In a world that seems to perpetually rush towards the next big thing, the simple act of gazing at the morning sun can be a profound antidote. While we’re often cautioned about the dangers of prolonged sun exposure, there’s a growing body of evidence suggesting that strategic sun gazing, particularly during the morning hours, can offer a plethora of benefits for our health and overall well-being.
Connecting with Nature’s Rhythm
The morning sun holds a special significance in various cultures and traditions around the world. From yoga practices to ancient rituals, there’s a recognition of the energizing and revitalizing effects of basking in the gentle glow of the rising sun. This isn’t merely symbolic; it’s deeply rooted in our biology.
Vitamin D Boost
One of the most well-known benefits of sun exposure is the synthesis of vitamin D in our bodies. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health, regulating immune function, and even influencing mood. By soaking in the morning sun, we can kickstart this process, ensuring our bodies receive an adequate dose of this essential nutrient.
Mood Enhancement
Have you ever noticed how your mood instantly lifts when you step outside on a sunny morning? Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, often dubbed the “happy hormone,” in our brains. By starting our day with sun gazing, we can set a positive tone for the hours ahead, promoting feelings of well-being and contentment.
Circadian Rhythm Regulation
Our bodies operate on a natural 24-hour cycle known as the circadian rhythm. Exposure to sunlight in the morning helps regulate this internal clock, signaling to our bodies that it’s time to wake up and be alert. By aligning ourselves with this natural rhythm, we can improve our sleep patterns and overall quality of rest.
Increased Energy and Alertness
The bright light of the morning sun stimulates the production of cortisol, often referred to as the “stress hormone.” While too much cortisol can indeed be harmful, the right amount helps us feel awake, alert, and focused. Sun gazing in the morning can provide the perfect boost of energy to kickstart our day on the right note.
Eye Health
Contrary to popular belief, gazing at the morning sun, when it’s at its gentlest, can actually benefit our eyes. This practice, known as sunning, involves closing the eyes and turning the face towards the sun, allowing its rays to penetrate the closed eyelids. Sunning is believed to improve vision, strengthen eye muscles, and even alleviate certain eye conditions.
Mindfulness and Stress Reduction
In our fast-paced world, finding moments of stillness and mindfulness can be challenging. Sun gazing offers a perfect opportunity to pause, breathe, and connect with the present moment. As we bask in the warmth of the morning sun, we can let go of stress and tension, allowing ourselves to experience a profound sense of calm and tranquility.
Precautions and Guidelines
While sun gazing can offer numerous benefits, it’s essential to approach this practice with caution and moderation. Here are some guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:
- Avoid Direct Sun During Peak Hours: Morning sun gazing is safest when done during the early hours after sunrise, when the sun’s rays are less intense.
- Protect Your Skin: Even during morning sun exposure, it’s crucial to protect your skin with sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin damage.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body responds to sun gazing. If you experience any discomfort or adverse effects, such as eye strain or headaches, it’s essential to take a break and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.
- Gradual Progression: Start with short sessions of sun gazing and gradually increase the duration as your body adjusts. Be mindful of any signs of overexposure or fatigue.
The ancient practice of sun gazing holds immense potential for enhancing our health and vitality, particularly when embraced during the morning hours. By integrating this simple yet powerful ritual into our daily routine, we can tap into the rejuvenating power of the sun and embark on a journey towards greater well-being and harmony with nature.
